To provide support for Court Services functions, which may include maintaining courtroom security.
FULL PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide support for Court Services functions, which may include maintaining courtroom security, assisting during court proceedings, serving court documents and warrants, providing assistance to Judges and attorneys, and performing general administrative tasks associated with court operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Maintains a security presence in the courtroom to ensure safety of court personnel, prevent disturbances of court proceedings, and prevent potential violence or use of weapons: enforces courtroom policies and maintains order within the courtroom while court is in session; provides protection for judges, attorneys, witnesses, jurors, or other participants in court proceedings; responds to violence, erratic behavior, alarms, or other unusual situations; intervenes in physical confrontations as necessary
Provides assistance to court officials during court proceedings; confirms attendance of subpoenaed witnesses; ensures that defense attorneys have signed in; arrests defendants ordered into custody by presiding Judge.
Serves warrants, subpoenas, court orders, license suspensions, and other court papers as required: serves citations or warrants for violations of state laws and local ordinances for other City departments.
Provides security to other City departments and responds to situations involving suspicious persons, silent/panic alarms, safety concerns, or other issues as needed.
Operates a variety of standard and specialized machinery, equipment, and tools associated with law enforcement and security, which may include a patrol vehicle, firearms, chemical weapons, emergency equipment, drug/alcohol testing materials, handcuffs, restraining devices, baton, flashlight, fire extinguisher, radio/communications equipment, metal detector, scanning device, safety equipment, or hand tools: inspects/maintains assigned police vehicles, uniforms, weapons, or other equipment.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include storing adjudicated case records, entering data into computer, answering telephone calls, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, preparing files, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or transporting documentation.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in law enforcement, criminal justice, court security, or general security work; supplemented by five (5) years previous experience and/or training involving law enforcement and courtroom security; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid Georgia P.O.S.T. Peace Officer certification, and must complete all required continuing education activities. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).
